Time and Tide Wait for No Man

To the students back to school for the new semester

                By Tim

My dear students,

First of all, I’d like to extend my warmest welcome to all you guys back to your  long-missing school after such a rare and prolonged vacation, which is unprecedented.

I know that some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I’m here talking with you about the importance of valuing time and what’s expected of all of you in this new semester.

As is an indisputable fact, human beings are such strange and incredible animals because we are blessed and bestowed with so valuable and unique a gift---the capability to think and reason, to use our brains. In other words, we have miraculous and complex psychology, which can sometimes be contradictory. For example, while we are tortured by the heavy stress of daily study and loads of homework, we hate staying at school and are longing for a break, long or short. Even an unexpected weekend would be quite satisfying. What about otherwise, the other way around? Vice versa. That is, after an extra long vacation, especially after we have been bothered by such a special situation, the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19, we are thirsty to be back to the campus sitting in the physical classroom and listening to the teacher face to face. Am I right? Absolutely!

Ok, guys, this is a brief interlude before I come to the topic.

Now let’s get back to work!

Well, in the English language, there are many expressions or proverbs describing the importance and worth of time and remind people to treasure every second of the day as well. In Chinese, we also have a lot of well-known proverbs and stories about cherishing time. A lost chance will never return. Flowers bloom again, and no one is a teenager. There are no two mornings in a day. Gold can be found without time. A lazy man may not tear his calendar, but he cannot keep time. To get time is to get everything. Time and tide wait for no man. Too many to list. But here I’d like to cite the last one, that is, time and tide wait for no man. You might be wondering why? Frankly, I would rather bring out the dual implication of the expression. First, its literal implication, that is, we should make good use of the specific unit of time of the day, every second, every minute or each hour. Second, I would comprehend the “time” here as the era, and the “tide” as the trend or current of the very era.

Plus, you might not be unfamiliar with the Song of Tomorrow, which reminds us of the value of time: Tomorrow upon tomorrow, so many tomorrows have gone! If we only eye on tomorrow, nothing in the world can be done! So it is with the era and the trend, which are transient and irretrievable. In Chinese we have the proverb saying that a lost chance will never return, which illustrates the significance of making the most of the present time. Similarly, the story about a legendary bird called Hanhao Bird is quite popular as well. It goes in this way: In warm weather all the other birds were busy building their nests to survive the severe winter. Seeing this the Hanhao bird took it for granted and turned a blind eye to it. She even made fun of them for their “stupid” behavior. But day by day winter was approaching. Hanhao bird was persuaded to act. Still, she kept playing around or slept all day long. Finally the snowy and stormy winter froze her to death while the other birds were enjoying their cozy nests. You might say that this is nothing but a tale, but the moral is always instructive: Never be too late to do preparations. Instead we need to plan ahead. On no account can we expect the return of the days that are gone. It’s foolish and useless to cry over spilt milk. Then take full advantage of each day, each hour, each minute or even every second to do what we want before we feel regretful. Please bear in mind that there’s no remedy for bygones! For the time being, more than half of the new semester has been taken away by the epidemic. What you are supposed to do is fully adjust yourselves and totally get involved in your study: completely concentrate upon the lectures, get your work well done, keep physically and mentally healthy, follow the well-roundedness way of education and finally become the pillar and backbone of the construction of the country.

Since you have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best school in the world – and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your promises to be somebody one day by achieving the biggest dreams with the most limited time, unless you pay attention to and show respect for your dear teachers, unless you take the advice of your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.

Maybe you could be a great writer – maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper – but you might not know it until you write that English paper – that English class paper that’s assigned to you. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor – maybe even good enough to come up with the new medicine or vaccine to fight against the disgusting virus and save the lives of the dead – but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class. Maybe you could be just a barber or a repairman—but you might not know it until you have accumulated enough professional knowledge and experience, which requires your immediate action rather than fantasy and daydreaming.

A missed chance will become bygones for ever because there’s no clock reversal. Just like the 24 Chinese lunar terms, each of which works so well to guide us for the right thing to do in the right season. Once it is missed, you will have to wait for another year. That’s why we say that missing a bus means waiting for just another 20 minutes but missing a chance means waiting for a whole life. Take the two terms Wakening of Insects and Grain Planting for instance. Wakening of Insects,as the term suggests, it reminds us to plough the farmland for planting and Grain Planting means it’s time to plant grains. If you miss the chances, you will have no grains to harvest, at least the grains will not be fully growing. So it is reasonable to do the right thing at the right time. A lost chance will never return.

The other implication of Time and Tide Wait for No Man is that you are expected to be fully aware of the existence of the New Era, which is characterized by reform and innovation, which are based on science and technology. There’s no denying that science and technology serves as the very foundation of the revitalization of the country. The 5 G and Beidou technologies are now playing an irreplaceable part in the world. Plus, the phased victory of the battle against COVID-19 has fully aroused the proud and pride of the Chinese people, meanwhile attracting the jealousy and stigmatization from a few western countries represented by the United States. Nevertheless, threats and intimidation will never work on China. The tribulations and setbacks China have gone through only add to the iron will and strengthen the resolution to be more achievable. China is becoming stronger and more powerful after standing up and being wealthier. The days when we were bullied and oppressed are gone! The days when China was bothered by poverty and underdevelopment will never return! As President Xi put it in his address on the 70th anniversary of the PRC,

No force in the world could possibly shake the status of such an amazing country as China! No power across the globe could hopefully obstruct the on-marching steps of the great Chinese people as well as the Chinese nation!

Moreover, the central government with Xi Jinping at its core proposes the idea of bearing global responsibilities as a great power, generating two grand initiatives of building a community with a shared future for mankind and the community for human beings’ health care. The Initiative of Belt and Road is being profoundly benefiting the people across the globe, which has won super recognition and respect of the whole world.

The primary victory against COVID-19 once again fully presents the cohesiveness of the Chinese people as well as Chinese wisdom, which proves the saying-- unity means power, knowledge means power.

Let’s join our hands to act now. Remember the proverb, the early bird can catch more worms. Please bear in mind that Time and Tide Wait for No Man!

Let us take a down-to-earth attitude and cherish every second of each day, lay a solid foundation of science and technology to boost the economy and to quicken the steps of take-off of our country and to live the dream of the Rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation!

It won’t be long before every dream of the nation comes true in the end!

It won’t be long before every one of you realizes your own dream and becomes the pride of the nation!

I firmly believe it!

You can make it!

Thank you all!
